How to apply

The first step in applying to the grant program is to create your online profile at https://strengthenalabamahomes.com. Next, you will complete questions and submit the following paperwork:

• Income information and insurance policy declaration pages
• Submit your last year's filed Federal 1040 form. If you receive social security, please submit your previous year's benefit statement
• Upload your homeowner's insurance policy declarations page, Wind insurance policy ), and Flood insurance policy

Your next step will be to choose a FORTIFIED Evaluator™ to complete a home evaluation. This step is a required step for the grant to be approved. The FORTIFIED™ Evaluation provides the homeowner and contractors with information on the work needed to mitigate a home. A FORTIFIED Evaluator will perform an initial review of the house's current condition and provide documentation of the steps necessary to reach either the FORTIFIED or Fortified Roof Level. The certified FORTIFIED Evaluator™ will work with your chosen contractor to document the work. They will submit the home for certification. However, You, as the homeowner, are responsible for paying a small fee directly to your evaluator. Our grants do not cover this cost.

What are the costs

Typically, FORTIFIED™ Evaluators charge a small fee for their service. These fees vary by the evaluator; most individuals seek several bids before selecting the professional they will work with. Although you might pay a small fee for the evaluation, the SAH grant program is not a reimbursement program. Therefore, you will not be required to pay for the work on your home up-front for the mitigation work.

Choosing a contractor

After your home has passed inspection, you will choose three contractors from a list of SAH qualified and trained contractors. These contractors will provide bids for the specific work needed on your home. Once you have selected your three bids, you will receive your grant award letter. You will need the award letter from the SAH program before any contractor or inspector can begin work.

The Benefits

Homeowners who have a FORTIFIED™ roof in Alabama receive discounts on the wind portion of their homeowner's insurance premium. Additionally, a study done by the University of Alabama has shown that homes with FORTIFIED™ roofs sell for about 7% more than homes without them.
